His boss told at interview that their work would continue for at least six months to a year, but was fired after only three weeks. You call a lawyer and ask, "Can he do that to me and get away with it?"

The lawyer hesitates before answering because there are several questions at the same time fall into a common, but important trap. Let's start with the trap: "Can you do that …?"

Your employer did. He fired that, assuming he told us a story accurately. So, the point is debatable as to say. I could, because he did. Having the power to do what he did. He is the boss, and the controls that works for and with him. But in reality, it is an entirely different issue is legally significant:

Did the right to do what he did?

Employment or labor attorney can influence this matter, for example, trying to determine if his employment is an employment at will, a contract for a specific term, or an agreement independent contractor. Also relevant is the question: How is your working relationship laws governed by state and federal and by case law, by precedent?

Assuming that the chief violated their rights, are there resources that can be conveniently and economically pursue under the law? Perhaps.

"And get away with it?" is an even more daunting issue.

Say your boss violated his rights, and are not legal resources that a lawyer will help you continue. Is it possible to know beforehand if you prevail, you will win in court or tribunal? The short answer is no.

There is no guarantee that your boss will not get away with their misdeeds. A judge or jury can make its decision in a very unpredictable. You may be able to appeal, which only would the answer to your original question beyond their reach.

The honest answer would be: "You know very well – yet!"
