How do I go about bidding on a construction project as a first time contractor? (Including requirements&forms)

What forms do I need to fill out?; What are the qualifications that need to be met (insurance, experience, etc…)?; Are there any grants (or any other tools of assistance) that I can take advantage of in my pursuit of this endeavor?

Look to your state’s construction board for advice on legal requirements for submitting bids; including insurance, experience and capacity. Be sure you have financing for the project lined up before bidding and have a good working relationship with both your banker and your vendors. Have conditional agreements in place with your subcontractors and make sure that they also have their ducks in a row. The SBA has useful information, but ultimately – you are on your own.
