Contractor Law
Does a contractor have to give a breakdown of a bid?
I have a chimney contractor who gave me a bid for several items of work on my chimney however when i ask that they give me a breakdown of how much it costs for each item and labor, etc., they say they don’t do that. Is there a law that says they have to?
There is no law that says that a bid must be itemized, as long as the entire scope of the work is spelled out and the total amount is included. As a customer, you have the right to accept or reject any bid. I generally don’t give itemized bids, due to the fact that I don’t want to have a person say, “You can do items 1, 4, 5, and 7, while contractor b can have 2, 3, and 6.” I bid a job to do the whole job, not just the stuff I do cheaper. Hope this helps.
