Performance Review, Pay Increase, Evaluation, Promotion?

Our annual reviews are coming up this month and I would like to know how much percent is considered a great pay increase for someone who has excelled at their position? They say inflation is based on 4% per year so I would think that I should at least get a 4% increase if not more of course. I have been working for this retail company (corporate office) for 3 years now (1 1/2 as a Independent Contractor) and the other 1 1/2 as a permanent employee. So for that past three years I have not seen a penny increase in my pay. When I go in for my review they are going to be judging me based on 1 year because it is an annual review but technically I have worked for them for 3yrs. What percent should I be happy with? I make $23 per hour right now but I would love to have $30 per hour. Thanks.

Good news! Your annual review is negotiable. Not many employees realize this, but it is.

4% might be on the high end and only if you’re scored very high on your review. It could certainly happen. I’d say a more common annual increase is between 2-3%.

So, when the boss says, you’re increase is XYZ%. Tell them you were hoping for ABC% and you’d like to know what you could have done to get to that number. Ask if you can show that improvement and receive that extra percentage point or two after a 3 month evaluation. Then work your butt off proving you deserve it. As always, get everything in writing.

Good luck!
