Contractors Insurance Services
In the recent economic downturn, many people have lost their jobs and have fallen on hard times. Because of this many people find themselves looking for other forms of income. One of these may different ways is to start offering their services to home owners.
The projects may range any anywhere from drywall to doing a small electrical projects to plumbing projects and even doing general handyman type work. However, just because someone’s grandfather taught them how to tinker around with a few things in a home doesn’t make them qualified to do the work.
A homeowner looking for a potential service provider is faced with some difficult decisions of choosing a contractor that is capable of handling their project. Depending on the state they may be required to hold a specific licensee for certain trades. Also on this list is insurance in order to protect not only themselves but also any property or buildings that they work on.
An often overlooked problem that many home owner face is when contractors do not pay their sub contractors. When this happens those subs will come after your property no matter if you have paid your bill to the contractor or not. The subcontractors can actually come back and place a mechanics lien on the property.
You’re also going to want to make sure that your contractor has the necessary insurance to be certain to cover any accidents that may happen during the project. Again the last thing that you want is to have your dream kitchen being constructed and have a water leak burst out in the middle of the project ruining not only the project your working on, but also you imported Brazilian hardwood flooring, also the finished basement ceiling below, should that contractor not have the necessary insurance in place.
Your insurance will be footing the bill. There are very few places available for homeowners and business owners to see the evaluation of other homeowners and business owners for contractors. Because of this, most of this legwork will need to be done on your own time. However, it’s time very well spent. Remember the more research you do now, the less headache you’ll have in the future
