Can a contractor withhold paychecks from a subcontractor?

I work for a major delivery service and a certain delivery has been lost, for which the apparent price is $2,000. My contractor owes me roughly $2,000 for hours I’ve already put in. Does he have the legal right to withhold my paychecks and make me pay the apparent price of the claim? Shouldn’t there be insurance for a package of this price, whether on the side of the receiver or the delivery service (company or contractor)?
Btw, I’m the driver, he’s the owner of the route/vehicle.

Depends on the circumstances, I guess.
If you and your contracter have an understanding – written or verbal – that you assume full responsibility for the merchandise once it is in your possession…hmm.
It seems a police report should be made if it might have been stolen, or maybe even if it was just lost. Either way because it may have been recovered and lay unclaimed even now with the authorities. They need the facts in case it turns up with them.
You may want to check with the appropriate legal eagle’s nest in your area about withholding your two grand. Good luck.
