A government contract is specifically defined as "any agreement or modification thereof between any contracting agency and any person for the provision of supplies or services or for the use of real or personal property including lease arrangements. "(41 CFR Part 60-250.2) In other words, if the provision of goods, services or facilities because any government wants to use, and may reach an agreement, may be a government contractor. Of course, if the agency in question is part of the federal government, you become a federal government contractor.

The first thing to get a DUNS number. DUNS means "DUNS" and is used by the federal government to keep track of contractors and their locations. You need this number to register with the Central Contractor Registration, which is used by government information exchange system.

Where most people run into the headache is all the government regulations required before they'll sign a contract with you. First, for a large amount of government work it helps to have a security clearance. The Lockheed Martin Corporation, has just picked up the largest federal government contractor out there, no need of security, when breaches are working on the largest aircraft latest for the Air Force. It would not do much good if our forces military opposition knew all of the specifications and capabilities of our new aircraft. Similarly, in the civilian sector, any federal contractor in charge of data migration for the CIA or the FBI did not get the contract if they can not guarantee security information from the agency. However, there are plenty of federal government contracts that require only a minimum security clearance, as the leasing of office space to a local branch or building new roads.

The other regulations are available from entertainment and job requirements. To to government contracts must comply with the Federal Contractor Job Listing Program. You must try to hire a certain percentage of its total workforce people with disabilities, Vietnam Era and other eligible veterans. Furthermore, you are required to immediately list any and all job openings with the Service nearest Employment Office of the State. Exceptions to this requirement are the jobs that are executives, senior management, squarely within the company or that will last less than three days. If a particular job does not fit one of these categories, should be given to the State Employment Office can fill it. The qualified special disabled veterans, Vietnam veterans, and veterans who served on active duty in any war or action for which a campaign badge was authorized to obtain the remission of priority. This does not mean you have to hire them, but it means you get the first crack in it. Also, If you are a federal contractor who hires subcontractors, you may need to ensure that their subcontractors also follow these requirements. If the contractor receives more than $ 25,000 from you, they have to meet these requirements or both are responsible. You also have to have written affirmative action plans, if you have 50 or more employees and $ 50,000 or more in federal contracts.

Then, of course, is the specific rules you need to know for your particular business specialty, which is too large to enter here. The most important thing to know about federal contracting is that it can be a very satisfying way to serve their country while living, provided they do not study of mind. You have to keep up with current regulations and policy changes, you have to know how to structure their offerings and, of course you have to do their market research. Good luck!
