Is there a general yardstick for costing improvements, such as patio and entrance?

I realize that every situation will be different, but even if there is a standard costing, perhaps per square foot, it would help. My contractor has come up with a plan and estimate to rebuild our front entrance and patio, and I would have no idea if his price is in line with similar work to a different property. The property is in the state of New York, between NYC and Albany.

get a couple quotes. Ask your neighbors if they recommend anyone. My dad does concrete, and there is no sure cost, cause there are way too many variables.
