Global warming and patriotism?

Do you think that if government contractors and lobbyists could find a way to make a profit off of global warming the way they did in the so called “War on Terror”, the solution would have been wrapped in a flag and sold as patriotism? Would the right-wing then have climbed on that band wagon too, once again without asking questions?
Oh Gengi M there were definitely side benefits for those that wanted to manipulate public opinion.
crabby_blindguy3, you said that the oil companies were big boys, that’s undoubtedly true, but they share that spot with the weapons industry and both have equal interest in keeping the Middle East unstable. Global warming threatens to reduce the profits for both of these industries.

Sure.

Their problem isn’t that there isn’t potential profit, however–its that the “big boys” of that group –the oil and coal commpanies- are not the ones who will be making a profit. In fact, they are going to be lucky if most o fthem don’t go bankrupt by mid-century.

That fact would be obvious to most people if they’take a step back from all the hype and jsut look at wha tis happening. Here’s a few (but by no means all) of the relevant points:

>we have the technology to reduce gasoline use by 30-50% over the next 20 years simply by building cars with more efficient engines, but other wise comparable to today’s vehicles Note tat the reduction in operating costs will be a major benefit to consumers
>wind turbines NOW in use produce electricity more cheaply than coal fired powerplants
>solar power is also cheaper, except for te high start-up cost. That has dropped by 50% since 2000, however, and is going to fall a lot more in the next decade as new technology reaches the market
> some things that seem small–for example compact flourescent bulbs–also save consumers money. The impact of switchng just tis one thing is equal to shutting down 50-75 coal powerplants
>the newest genration of aircraft (e.g. the Boing 787) use 20% less fuel.

Most of these represent areas in which corporations–mostly entrepreneurial growth companies–are making high profits now and are growth industries, creating new jobs and economicgrowth. In addition, the across-the-board savings for consumers means large amounts of money that will be spent on goods and services other than jsut payingutility and gasoline bills–stimulating the economy andcreating jobs generally. and this is a very small sample.

NONE of which does anything for the fossil fuel industry except reduce the market for their basic product.
