Graco Contractor Gun

What do I do if my spray gun is not sealing after releasing the trigger?

I have a 2006 Graco contractor 2 series spray gun and when I realease the trigger it continues to spray for 3 to 5 seconds with a stream of paint lacing the wall on the last second! The gun gives me no problems sealing when I start spaying but after 10 seconds of use it goes back to not sealing so if I let the gun sit after spraying a wall it will go back to normal then 10 seconds after use it won’t seal right again? It’s very frustrating spaying a wall at a time and I know it’s not my tip because I’ve changed it twice! I don’t know if my packing are shot or if the inner function of my trigger is getting stuck but if somebody has had this problem can you please explain to me how to fix this problem! Thanks

They don’t make things the way they used to, do they?
It could be a defect, in which case, you may have answered your own question. The O-rings and plastic seals in your gun could be bad or dried bits of paint could be clogging it (there is another strainer in the gun, don’t run without it, it’s easier to clean than the gun). Try running MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) through it or laquer thinner or naptha, but chase it with mineral spirits, to see if that will help. If that don’t work, take the gun apart and clean it with MEK and inspect all of the seals and seats.
You didn’t mention what type of paint you are using, I’m guessing it’s latex on walls. If you don’t clean your rig thourouly when changing from latex to oil base paints, or vise versa, you will always have problems (it’s better to have a rig for each kind of paint, it’s a lot less trouble, and more time for more beers ). If you are using just one kind of paint, your rig doesn’t have to be super clean, although, I would suggest running a final rinse of mineral spirits through it after each job, no matter what type of paint you are using. Clean up with water for latex paints (I’m sure you know that) and chase it with spirits, especially if the paint contains linseed oil/Alkyd or a synthetic. Always strain your paint (panty hose works the best) and keep the pot covered, especially if you are working out doors. Make sure the strainer is on the pickup tube and is not damaged (cover the strainer with window screen).
Add Flowtrol to latex paint and you will have a lot less trouble (Penetrol for oil based paints, both will slow down the drying time, but you will have less mechanical trouble and a smoother finnish). Also, Flowtrol will keep the packings in the pump in good shape.
Don’t get me started on power rollers, they need a lot of disassembled cleaning at the end of each day.
Sprayers are enough trouble to make a person go back to brushing and rolling, I did, the over spray got me into to much trouble. Be careful.
