What information should be enclosed in a cover letter for a resume and who should it be addressed to?

Also, if you have worked for yourself for years how should your job experience be listed? For example, my husband has been a sub contractor for years and has done work for several different construction companies. Should I list all of those in the job history section or simply state he was self employed and use those companies for references? Any advice would be helpful

Absolutely not. He just need to list jobs that he got 5 yrs experience back then until now even if most of them are in the same field : construction. If he do the same duties in those job, he should only list jobs since last 5 years only. Earlier than that, dont have to list it. Employers wont call all of his former companies. They might call 2-3 last employers i guess. For the cover letter part, be specific and express in words that you want to try something new, more challenging.
