Light Contractor

Need to move light switch from one site of doorway to other?
I recently remodeled my kitchen. I had issue’s with the contractor…long story short my wall jack ended up in a very inconvenient location. I would like to move it myself especially cause the contractor left the kitchen 70% complete. Luckily I can get to all the wiring under my house it’s just that where the light switch should go there is an outlet below it and if I am not mistaken it’s in the same circuit. Thanks in advance
If I read your description correctly:
the switch needs to be on the other side of a door and you can get under neath the exact location of both sides of the door.
1) Buy a single gang “pop-in” electrical box from Lowe’s or other. The box can be plastic or fiberglass. Metal ones require more material to install. 1 Single gang blank cover, 3 red wire-nuts and wire.
2) You will have to cut the sheetrock at the exact location where you want the switch using the “pop=-in” as a template.
3) Drill a hole from under neath, INTO the wall, under the existing and future switch location.
4) Turn off the power for the existing switch.
5) If the breaker is 15 amp, you will need wire size 14. If it’s 20 amp, you will need wire size 12.
6) Remove the switch.
7) Remove the wires from the switch ONLY! Leave everything else ALONE! ( in the existing switch box)
You will have to “fish” the romex ( 14-2 or 12-2 from the existing switch box down the wall, into the hole that you drilled, across, up into the hole that you drilled and pull it out at the future switch location. Pull out 2 feet of wire.
9) Put the wire into the “pop-in” box and put it into the wall.
10) Strip out the wire and attach them to the switch. Install it and put the cover on.
11) In the existing switch box, strip out the wire and attach the wires to the old wires. You will have 1 old wire and 1 new wire twisted together. Install a wire-nut. Do that for all three wires.
(black, white and bare)
12) Install blank plate onto box.
Email me If I can be of any more help. Hope this helps.
