What kind of courses would one take for city planning …?

Community planning. The person that helps plan a community from the bottom up – meaning water rights, contractors, parks & rec, city planning….ALL of it.

Where does one start?

City planning is a fantastic field to get in to!

If you’re still in high school, you’ll want to take some courses to prepare you for university. I have some recommendations here: http://www.cityplanner.ca/nucleus/index.php?itemid=216

If you’re in university, you’ll want to take a related major, such as geography, engineering, landscape architecture, urban planning, or urban studies.

If you’re already working, I suggest doing some reading and soul searching to figure out what particular area of urban planning you are most passionate about – e.g. sewers and drainage planning, traffic and transportation planning, open space and parks planning, conservation and environmental planning, or even planning law.

After you pick your specialization, you’ll want to figure out where you can a planning-related job in your city. Try the three levels of government (city/provincial or state/federal), and see what private sector consultants have openings. Utility companies sometimes look for planners too.

You can also look up job openings with your country’s planning association:
- Canada: Canadian Institute of Planners (www.cip-icu.ca)
- USA: American Planning Association (www.planning.org)

After all that, if you’re still stuck, feel free to drop me a line.
Good luck!
