I a job is not done right do I have to pay the contractor?

My roof was leaking so I had a contractor come and do a repair, I signed no contract, but he was dealing with my insurance company. The job was not done right and he over bid it to my insurance co, i had 4 other roofers come in and look at the roof. I have not paid him yet and dont’ want to because now I need to have it done over, what should I do? I’m very confused. Thank you
