Paying contractors in cash?

I’m getting my basement done for $2600 and he told us to pay him half in cash on the day he comes, and the other half when it’s all done, now it sounded a bit risky to me but i’m not sure..is this normal?

I’m getting the carpet from basement removed and putting tiles in, now I am aware that we should demand a receipt from him on both payments but still…half now? can’t he just walk away with that money

Absolutely, he can walk away with your money.

You’re better off going to Home Depot with him to pay for the supplies yourself (which you can guarantee get to your house), and then pay the labor 1/3 1/3 1/3 as the work gets done, withholding the last payment until it is COMPLETE.

The cash thing is the scarey part – did you get a certificate of insurance from him? Does he have the proper licenses to do this? Or is the entire job “under the table?”

$2600 isn’t enough to finish a basement properly. When a deal is “too good to be true”, it’s the perfect setup to rip you off.
