I have not registered for GST but general contractor giving me GST money?
I was hired by a general contractor and he says he has to pay me the GST even if I did not intend to bill him for it. What do I do about the GST monies that is being paid. My business is not registered and also not registered for GST because it was not required as of yet.
This is probably because (1) his bookkeeping system needs to have an entry for GST and/or (2) he has been audited in the past and is trying to be careful. The CRA is always on the look out for under the table work and it isn’t that hard to get caugut.
You should register anyways. You only have to remit the net between what you collect and what you have paid out on your own supplies. The threshold where you HAVE to register is only $30,000 gross sales in one year. unless your business is very part time and almost just a hobby you should register
