Entering in the second half of 2009, there are numerous issues that affect IUPAT members in Ontario, Canada.
• Unemployment in Ontario for all trades IUPAT is between 15-18% and up in our members. It is very important to keep in constant touch with the office of the Union and representatives to receive more information Updates on the work situation.

Hazardous Materials Workers (235H) learning outcomes have been developed by the steering committee coordinated by MTCU. the next action is the Minister to waive the condition of grade 10.
Employment Insurance Reform – Ontario Federation of Labour
• Legislative reform is required to promote equity for workers at work and in transition: Increase benefits to at least 60% of normal income, using a worker's best 12 weeks of employment;
• Reduce the hours of qualifying for a uniform standard across Canada;
• Eliminate the waiting period of two weeks;
• Remove the pension income, vacation pay, severance pay, termination and all other money received at the time of dismissal;
• As a result of bankruptcy and insolvency, the money owed to workers must be paid as a priority.
Training:
The OIFSC now offers all new applicants to the IUPAT and current members of the opportunity to prepare in writing a Certificate of Training in painting and glass industries. Registered Apprentices do not qualify for this program. Contact the OIFSC at 416-635-7300 for information about the next class and registration. The legislation was introduced on 13 May to establish the School of Crafts, a regulation to modernize the Ontario College learning and skilled trades system. The College of Trades will promote and attract more people to the trades, help make it easier for internationally trained workers to obtain certification, training standards and certification established to serve the craft and the public interest to conduct research to train for the future, and give the sector specialized trade ownership of critical decisions on issues of mandatory certification and apprentice ratios.
Health and safety:
The STAR program is still active. A modification of the program now recognizes some training outside the training centers at the discretion of the representative local union.
The CSAO's annual report was recently published some interesting data that may interest you:
• The three causes of loss time more effort is injuries / repetitive strains, beaten by / against objects falling;
• Musculoskeletal injuries are related the leading cause of injury;
• Occupational disease, in particular, increased pleural mesothelioma deaths as a result of exposure asbestos;
• Noise-induced hearing loss still causes a number of claims allowed working non-fatal diseases.
Vacation pay:
Please remember that there are two payments per year (June and December). The application for the payment of vacation pay is not advised and discouraged. Please contact us or your representative of the Ontario IUPAT for details.
